Panama hats originated in Ecuador
It was during the digging of the Panama Canal that Panama hats gained a lot of popularity. Thousands of workers wore them to shield themselves against the sun and heat. It was not until 1906 when United States President Theodore Roosevelt was photographed wearing one during his visit to the Panama Canal construction site, bringing their popularity to the world's attention. As a result, they quickly became known as Panama hats throughout the world despite originating in Ecuador.
